As a moms and marketers, we’re often struck by all the ways helping kids become functional adults is similar to building a brand. We find ourselves incorporating advice and phrases we lob at our kids into blog posts and presentations. To our way of thinking, this makes perfect sense – marketing works best when you think of your organization as a person with a personality, values, a distinct voice, and even a sense of personal style.
One thought we share with both audiences – the little people and the professional people – is to be honest about who you are. So in the spirit of taking our own advice, here are a few tips from our mommy files we think you might want to keep in mind when building your brand … or, as it turns out, parenting your child!
Know who you are … and who you aren’t. Yes, we said this already, but authenticity is always good advice. No organization (or human) can do it all. Know what your core skills are and be honest about what you can, and can’t, do. When you’re clear about your value, it’s easier to communicate it to others.
Be consistent. Relationships work best when all involved know what to expect. Building a brand is easier when your look, voice, and message is consistent. Consistency helps people recognize you more quickly so they feel comfier with you, which leads to trust. And as all moms know, trust is built, not bought.
Don’t try to please everyone. Some people aren’t going to like you. And that’s okay. Focus on making sure you like you. If you (read your product and services) are solid, enough people will recognize the value you’re bringing to the table.
Share the spotlight. No one likes someone who can only talk about themselves. That’s true for humans and brands. So double check those social platforms to make sure you’re focused on principles and topics, not just on you.
Play the long game. Short term thinking can, and often does, lead to quick wins. But if those wins come at the expense of relationships, long term growth, or trust they’re not really wins.
Dance with the one who brung ya. Okay, this one is from Malayna’s grandma’s repertoire. Never take the people who are already in your world for granted. Current customers/friends should never take a backseat to organizations and people you want to pull into your orbit. Yes, make new friends/customers, but stay loyal to those who’ve helped you get where you are.
Generosity is good … for your spirit and your business. Slapping a logo on everything you touch is no longer sufficient if you’re out to grow relationships, brand lift, and revenue. Instead, share your knowledge, expertise, and humor without asking for anything in return (which is pretty much what content is all about).
Be brave. Innovative ideas don’t always pay off, but they often do and they’re usually worth trying even if it’s just about learning something from the miss. Working from a place a fear won’t get you nearly as far as a bold approach so get creative, dare to be different, and be open-minded about what constitutes a win.
Own your mistakes. None of us is perfect. When you screw up, cop to it, apologize, and do what you can to make it right.
